Koroibos Olympic Beer from Arillas

Most of you probably know that Arillas is the home of Corfu Beer, a microbrewery producing some of the best beers in Greece. The Corfu Microbrewery brewed its first beer in 2007 and in just 5 years has become a household name on Corfu.

Well, for those of you who didn’t know just how good Corfu Beer is, here’s more proof. Corfu Beer has been selected among 700 breweries by JD Wetherspoon, a chain of more than 800 pubs in Britain, to brew a special Real Ale for the London Olympics! This special Olympic Real Ale will be called Koroibos and will be, according to the official description:

A light-golden ale with a delicate malty, toffee body complimented by soft fruit and citrus character.

Sounds delicious, doesn’t it?

The name Koroibos was chosen to honour the very first winner of the Olympic Games in 776 B.C. Koroibos was a cook, came from Elis (Ilida) and won the only race those first Olympics had, the Stadion, which was 192 meters. The only prize Koroibos received for his Olympic win was a branch of olive, as opposed to the millions today’s athletes get….

So, congratulations to Corfu Beer and those of you who visit London for the Olympics, drink a glass of Koroibos to Arillas and Corfu!
