Greeks are waking up!!!

May 30, 2011

Greek situationAs you may know, since 25 May the Greeks have followed the example of the Spanish and are gathering in town squares to express their anger and opposition to our lives being plundered in name of the IMF, EU and other such charitable institutions. In Syntagma square in Athens there were between 50.000 and 100.000 demonstrators yesterday (Sunday 29 May) night! And the greatest thing of all is that they are not just demonstrating…. They are talking about their feelings and problems, they are listening to other people’s feelings and problems and they are trying to find a solution!

Protest at Dimarchiou square CorfuYesterday we went to the Dimarchiou square in Corfu, behind the old town hall. More than 500 people came by, many took the microphone to talk, some of them for the first time in their lives, there was a lot of clapping and encouraging and listening! I don’t know if I can put the feeling of being there into words… It’s a feeling that things are finally changing in Greece, a feeling that ANYTHING is possible, as long as enough people want it and decide to go for it!

It was only the fifth day of protest but things are starting to “magically” happen… Someone came with proper sound equipment so that people speaking could be heard, someone else came with paint and pieces of cloth to make protest signs,  someone else is writing a theatrical sketch to be performed in the square sometime this week, someone else suggested getting a projector and showing films, some are bringing their musical instruments with them ….. Many actions, all triggered by this feeling of “power of the people”!

It looks like the square is going to be the hottest spot in Corfu town this summer. If you happen to be there after 20.00, drop by… I can assure you, you will not be bored, and maybe you can get a feeling of the “new greek vibe”!!! Here’s a video of Sunday 29 May.
